Smart Score Methodology

The GoBuy Smart Score is a 0-100 trust score for Amazon products. It evaluates review authenticity, not product quality. This document explains every signal, every weight, and every threshold used in the calculation.

1. Overview

Amazon star ratings are broken. A product with 4.9 stars and 2,000 reviews might be excellent, or it might be the result of coordinated review manipulation, incentivized feedback, and templated fake reviews. The star rating alone gives you no way to tell the difference.

The GoBuy Smart Score exists to solve this problem. It is a trust score, not a quality score. It answers a single question: How much should you trust the reviews and ratings you are seeing?

A product can be cheap, mediocre, and poorly made but still have a high Smart Score, because its reviews are genuine. A product can be genuinely excellent but have a low Smart Score, because its reviews have been manipulated. Smart Score measures the integrity of the feedback system, not the product itself.

The score operates on a 0-100 scale and is computed from eight independent signal categories. Each category captures a different dimension of trust, from verified purchase ratios to linguistic analysis of review text. The signals are weighted according to their predictive power for detecting manipulated reviews, based on analysis of millions of Amazon product listings.

Smart Scores are recalculated every 24 hours. A product that was trustworthy yesterday may not be tomorrow, and vice versa. The score reflects current conditions, not historical reputation.

2. The Eight Signal Categories

Each signal below contributes to the final Smart Score according to its specified weight. The weights were determined through statistical analysis of confirmed manipulated vs. legitimate product listings.

3. Score Calculation

The final Smart Score is computed as a weighted sum of all eight signal categories. Each signal produces a sub-score from 0 to 100. The sub-scores are then multiplied by their respective weights and summed to produce the final 0-100 Smart Score.

Smart Score = (S1 × 0.20) + (S2 × 0.18) + (S3 × 0.15) + (S4 × 0.12) + (S5 × 0.10) + (S6 × 0.10) + (S7 × 0.08) + (S8 × 0.07)

Where S1 through S8 are the sub-scores (0-100) for each signal category.

The result is normalized to a 0-100 scale and mapped to a letter grade:

Smart Score Grading Scale

A
85-100
Excellent
High confidence: reviews are authentic and trustworthy.
B
70-84
Good
Strong trust signals with minor concerns.
C
55-69
Moderate
Mixed signals: exercise caution and read reviews carefully.
D
40-54
Weak
Significant trust issues detected. Investigate thoroughly.
F
0-39
Poor
Strong evidence of review manipulation. Do not rely on ratings.

Smart Scores are re-evaluated every 24 hours. The score reflects the current state of the product's reviews, ratings, and seller data. Historical scores are archived but do not influence the current score.

4. What Smart Score Is Not

Not a quality score

A cheap product can score 90+ if its reviews are genuine. An excellent product can score 40 if its reviews are manipulated. Smart Score measures trust, not quality.

Not a popularity score

A product with 10 reviews and a product with 10,000 reviews can both achieve high scores. Review count does not directly influence Smart Score. What matters is the authenticity of those reviews.

Not a replacement for reading reviews

Smart Score tells you whether the reviews are trustworthy. It does not tell you whether the product is right for you. Read the reviews, especially the critical ones, even when the Smart Score is high.

Not legal, medical, or financial advice

Smart Score is an informational tool. It does not constitute advice of any kind. Always use your own judgment and consult appropriate professionals for purchasing decisions involving health, safety, or significant financial impact.

5. GoBuy Verified Program

Products that achieve a Smart Score of 80 or higher for 90 consecutive days are eligible for the GoBuy Verified badge. The badge signals sustained trustworthiness over time.

1
90-day threshold: A product must maintain a Smart Score of 80+ for 90 consecutive days. A single day below 80 resets the counter.
2
Automatic suspension: If a verified product's score drops below 80, the badge is automatically suspended within 24 hours. The product must rebuild its 90-day streak to regain it.
3
Weekly re-evaluation: Even after earning the badge, products are re-evaluated every week to ensure continued compliance.
4
Free for all brands: There is no fee, application, or relationship required. The badge is earned entirely through data. Brands cannot pay for it, and they cannot pay to remove a competitor's badge.
